Tournament History The PTT Pattaya Open is celebrating 21 years on the WTA Tour in 2012. It has been held at the Dusit Thani, Pattaya since its inception in 1991. Winner of the US$75,000 inaugural tournament was Indonesia’s Yayuk Basuki, who triumphed again in 1993. Since the beginning the tournament has always attracted star names and the players who have graced the Dusit Thani courts include: Anna Kournikova, Martina Hingis, Conchita Martinez, Patty Schnyder, Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva, Ana Ivanovic, Agnieska Radwanska and Daniela Hantuchova. 2009 marked the beginning of a new era for the tournament when the WTA upgraded the tournament to be one of the new international series of tournaments. The prize money was increased to US$220,000 and the tournament was re-named PTT Pattaya Open, when PTT Public Company Limited joined as the principal title sponsor alongside Pattaya City. The tournament not only focuses on attracting the world’s top tennis stars, but also supports the local Thai tennis players through offering them wild cards into the qualifying rounds and main draw of the PTT Pattaya Open. To date well over 120 wild card slots have been given out to Thai players and the policy will continue in 2012, to give the top performing local talent the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best players in the world. In recognition of the high standard achieved by the tournament, the tennis players on the WTA Tour voted the PTT Pattaya Open as the “Tournament of the Year” in 2010, beating 32 other tournaments from around the world in the process. The PTT Pattaya Open has been at the forefront of women’s tennis for longer than any other professional tennis tournament in the region. Its popularity remains strong, which is a tribute to the venue, the organization, the sponsors and Pattaya City authorities whom have given their full support to the tournament throughout the 21 years it has been held at the Dusit Thani Hotel. |
