The 3rd Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, penultimate stop on the Swatch-FIVB Women’s Beach Volleyball World Tour will be held on Karon Beach, Phuket from 4 - 9 November 2008. The tournament which offers prize money of US$175,000, has attracted entries from the world’s leading professional beach volleyball teams to what is regarded as one of the biggest beach volleyball tournament in Asia.
A total of over 70 of the world’s leading beach volleyball teams from up to 30 countries are expected at the tournament. Those nations taking part include: Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and the USA.
Thailand as the host country is allocated 2 teams in the main draw
and up to an additional 4 teams will participate in the qualifying rounds.
The 2007 title holders at the Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT are the current World and Olympic Champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh of the USA.
The Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT is sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and the Volleyball Association of Thailand (TVA), and is played over 6 days of competition, with the country quota play-offs being held on 4 November, qualification rounds being held on 5 November and the main draw taking place from the 6 - 9 November. Matches will start from 09.00 daily, except on finals day when matches start at 15.00.
Both semi-finals on Saturday 8 November and the final and 3rd/4th place play-off on Sunday 9 November will be televised “live” on national TV and the Sports Channel in Thailand and on Eurosport and in the USA. In addition to the “live” broadcast, a special highlight show of the tournament will go out to over 400,000,000 households worldwide.
Admission to the tournament is free, and the programme includes beach volleyball camps, cheerleaders and many other activities and games in the tent village, adjacent to the centre court.
The tournament is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Sports Authority of Thailand, PTT Public Co., Ltd, and Kata Group of Hotels, Phuket Gazette, Haad Thip, Woraburi Resort, FBT, TOT and CS Loxinfo.
